The peaches have an underpainting of a purple mix (Alizarin Crimson and Ultramarine Blue), then many, many layers of yellows, reds and orange watercolor washes. ←
The basket is under painted with layers of Ultramarine Blue. With a fine pointed brush, layers of Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber were added, leaving lots of white edges for contrast. ←
The Bluebird is under painted with the purple mix, then painted with Ultramarine Blue and touches of Manganese Blue. ←
The cloth area also has an underpainting of the purple mix and light washes of Ultramarine Blue. Then various green mixtures were layered on top. ←

More of the basket is painted here, with the Ultramarine Blue underpainting showing the first layer of paint, then Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna is painted on top. →
I thought the green color of the cloth was too dull looking, too neutralized, so I carefully wiped off the green color with a damp sponge. Then I repainted the purple underpainting. While it was drying, I experimented with other greens mixes until I came up with a green I liked better. Painting is all about personal choice. Fortunately, 300# Arches watercolor paper is very sturdy for wiping off paint., so not a problem about changing my mind! I also painted Burnt Umber in the fabric shadows for the flower under the basket. → |

Various red mixtures completed the flower in the shadows under the basket. ←
Now a variety of greens were painted on the shadowed cloth. Light Burnt Umber washes were painted in the light flower. ←
