COLOR THEORY for WATERCOLOR

This is the class I wanted to take when I first began painting with watercolor, when I needed clear step by step instructions to learn just enough color theory to understand the “whys” of color mixing. You will have great fun discovering the amazing transparent, opaque, and staining qualities of watercolors by painting swatches, glazing in layers for glowing secondary colors, and mingling wet into wet colors with leaf shapes. You will also learn insider tips on such skills as brush care and controlling water.
All levels of painting experience are welcome!

Travel deep into color theory and learn how to create luminous tans and beautiful grays by mixing neutral colors with watercolors. Clear step by step instructions will lead you to discover the wonders of color wheels and the utility of color charts for creating muted oranges, designer purples, and earthy greens. Have great fun exploring watercolor wet into wet techniques and bring to life gorgeous neutralized leaves. You will leave our workshop brimming with new ideas for your own painting adventures! It is not necessary to take the January Color Theory workshop before taking this class. All levels of painting experience are welcome!
MAGICAL WATERCOLOR TEXTURES

Create amazing magical textures in watercolor with materials other than brushes. With step by step instruction, experiment with plastic wrap, wax paper, facial tissue, sponges and cheesecloth combined in a variety of ways with watercolor. Great fun! These textures invite expression in a wide array of styles, from abstract to realism. All levels of painting experience are welcome!

Come paint a rose with Patricia Schmidt! With step-by-step instruction, paint a luscious, soft-focus watercolor background with wet-into-wet techniques on 300# Arches cold press paper. Learn her special transfer technique for disappearing pink guidelines on the practice rose painting. For luminous rose leaves, learn great tips on masking the tiny leaf veins, plus glazing layers for glowing color and shadows. Enjoy viewing several of Patricia's floral watercolors from start to finish showing these techniques and some variations in a PowerPoint presentation. Please join us!

Patricia Schmidt
has been painting with watercolor for over thirty years and is known for her hyper-realistic paintings alive with color and drenched with light.
She is a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society and the Watercolor Society of Oregon; a charter member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, a member of the Oregon Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society, the Oregon Society of Artists and SPLASH, a professional artist group. Her paintings are included in the watercolor books “Splash Retrospective: 20 years of Contemporary Watercolor Excellence“ (2013), “Splash 14: Light and Color” (2013), “Splash 12: Celebrating Artistic Vision” (2011) and the Winter 2005 “Watercolor“ magazine. Patricia has taught watercolor, drawing and colored pencil classes as adjunct faculty for several colleges as well as classes at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon Coast.
She has illustrated a children’s book “A Dolphin Named Destiny” (2024) with watercolored pen & ink drawings. She has also illustrated greeting cards for six greeting card companies and pen & ink designs for a rubber stamp company.
