I adore the Kingfisher bird figure in this blue pitcher that my grandmother used for lemonade. The sunflowers, bluebird and sunny yellow tablecloth remind me of warm late summer days.

Figs are one of the oldest cultivated fruits and when placed close together and overlapping form a heart shape. The Chinese Calligraphy symbols in the background are from a favorite saying and are also the title of this painting.

Shikata ga nai or “it can’t be helped” is the traditional Japanese way of maintaining dignity and enduring the hardships during the World War II Internment of the Japanese American people, This phrase is painted in Japanese symbols on the cloth border. The book Stubborn Twig by Lauren Kessler, the story of these tragedies, the challenges and the courage of three generations of the Hood River, Oregon Yasuis family during this time, inspired this painting.
